No performance could happen at Theater J without our ushers, a group of dedicated individuals who help us create a welcoming environment for all patrons.

Our ushers generally arrive one hour before the show to help greet patrons, take tickets, pass out programs, sell concessions, and create a pleasant theater going experience for our audiences, as well getting to see the performance. They work under the direct supervisor of our house managers.

We do not require our ushers to wear a ‘uniform,’ but we ask that they dress professionally and respectfully, as if attending as a patron (no jeans, t-shirts, or athletic wear, please). If possible, they wear all black. They are given a badge to wear so that the patrons can recognize them as the person to go to with questions and concerns.

The house manager will generally assign jobs for the ushers when they arrive. Jobs will include, but aren’t limited to stuffing programs with any additional pages, tidying up the theater (we provide bags and gloves), staffing our concessions stand, or answering the questions of early patrons.

As patrons start to arrive and the house opens:

1 directing patrons to theater, ticket office, and concessions
1 tearing tickets at the doors
1 in the theater handing out programs and assisting patrons
1 at the concessions booth

Once the show is over, they will walk through the theater looking for items left behind. We have gloves for them to use.

As front-of-house volunteers, ushers are essential to creating a welcoming space for all our patrons. Theater J and the Edlavitch DCJCC commit to being an inclusive, safe, and welcoming space for all. This institution does not tolerate discrimination or harassment based on race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations from either patrons or staff. Please visit our website at theaterj.org to learn more about our policies and procedures.
