Dear Theater J Community,

With the impacts of COVID-19 changing daily, we wanted to update you on our current activities at Theater J:

With tremendous sadness, Theater J has cancelled the production of Becoming Dr. Ruth. We were looking forward to sharing Naomi Jacobson’s brilliant performance with a new audience, but our public health emergency makes that impossible.

If you have purchased tickets to or have a subscription package that includes Becoming Dr. Ruth, Theater J’s Ticket Office will reach out to you this week. It is impossible to cancel an entire run without creating serious and lasting hardships for staff and artists. We hope you will consider donating your tickets back to Theater J as a tax-deductible donation or exchanging your tickets for a future performance rather than asking for a refund.

If you need assistance with your tickets for the remainder of the season, please contact our Ticket Office ( or 202.777.3210) and our staff will help you change to another performance this season. Please be aware we have higher than normal call volume. Our staff will get back to you as soon as they can, and we appreciate your patience.

We continue to plan to produce the final show of our season, Compulsion or the House Behind by Rinne Groff, set to begin performances June 5.

Even after a relatively short amount of time in solitude, we can sense the hunger that so many in our community have to connect, to be in the presence of others, and to share in experiences together. Theater has always been a place where people can gather and reflect, and once this pandemic is behind us, we’re going to continue to fill a very sacred need. Until we meet next, we wish you good health, patience, and peace.

As always, we thank you for being part of Theater J’s extended family.

With thanks,

Jojo Ruf & Adam Immerwahr
